There are two basic principles that may explain what’s happening here.
As we age, we accumulate DNA damage from free radicals. How efficiently the body removes this DNA damage determines how fast we age (and how long we can stay free from cancer). If the body is unable to neutralize and remediate the DNA damage, we age fast. If the body is able to deal with the DNA damage, then the person appears to not be aging much.
Some scientists are reporting that if antioxidant defense systems in the body decline, the damage of the free radicals can be great. When enzymes such as catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutamate-cysteine ligase and methionine sulphoxide reductase were produced in higher amounts in the body, lifespan was increased. The amount of damage done to the body was lower.
Our antioxidant vitamins vitamin A, C, and E as well as other vitamins and minerals act as coenzymes in thousands of reactions in the body. These reactions are modulated by enzymes but the enzymes cannot work well without vitamin antioxidants.
Many other reactions in the body depend on detoxification enzymes (and coenzymes) to eliminate toxins in the body. When too many toxins accumulate in the body, aging and eventual death occurs.
Overeating can overstress the pancreas in several ways. We feel heavy and fatigued after overeating because we have exceeded the ability of our enzymes to break down all the food we ate. The pancreas also has to respond to high levels of carbohydrate by producing more insulin when the blood sugar rises higher from eating too many carbohydrates at one time.
A stressed out pancreas interferes with normal functioning of the organ and can result in lower production of digestive enzymes. And if the foods we ate are not raw but are cooked and over processed, then digestion draws upon the body’s reserves of enzymes for the processing of the foods.
So why is it that people start feeling better when they take enzymes either in enzyme supplement form or from raw juices? It’s because supplying enzymes saves the body an extra step of having to create them.
It’s because most of us tend to be over eaters who have been demanding our pancreas far too much and too long to overproduce these enzymes. Once provided, the pancreas says thank you for a much needed vacation by providing an enzyme supplement.
